Xperium: research in action

Efforts to make us perform better, interact more closely with our environment, improve our health, etc. are key focuses of research and innovation that throw up considerable scientific, technological, economic, social, legal and ethical concerns as to the structural evolution of society.
Xperium’s third season highlights two aspects of this revolution: digital change and the emergence of new materials. It also encourages historic, epistemological and educational reflection on the approaches used by researchers to augment human capabilities and more generally move science forward.

• From molecule to drug – Therapeutic efficacy and physical state of drugs (physics)
• Parallelism and analogy – History of science, epistemology and teaching (epistemology)
• Using biomaterials to repair humans – Medical devices for prolonged liberation of active ingredients (chemistry and healthcare)
• Robotization of additive manufacturing – 3D reproduction of highly complex forms (robotics and automation)
• Miniature and nomadic electrochemical storage – Micro-batteries and micro-supercapacitors for connected objects (nanotechnology)
• Neuro-inspired vision systems – Applied to artificial vision (ITC)
• Tactile feedback tablet – See and touch virtual objects (electrical engineering and IT)
• Innovative glasses and NMR – Observe atoms using ultra high-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (chemistry)

Xperium also runs an annual Challenge jointly organised with its partners: the regional academic authority (Rectorat), the Hauts-de-France region and I-Site ULNE, with support from Enedis.

10 teams made up of secondary school students from Hauts-de-France and students from the University of Lille have one day to imagine, design and build original and innovative solutions for the challenges put to them.

At the end of the day, each group pitches its idea in public before a jury of experts who then select the best projects and reward them with one of the Xperium Challenge prizes.

Since the start of the 2019 academic year, Xperium has also included a cycle of conferences and debates to build on the exhibitions and offer other forms of knowledge mediation.

The Axel Kahn conference entitled “Science et éthique, penser l’Humain” was the first event as part of this initiative on 7 October 2019.

It was followed by the double Bernard Andrieu & Jean Minier conference entitled “Plus vite, plus haut, plus sport” on 20 January 2020.

A third conference is currently being prepared for June 2020. It will complete the cycle et and will open by addressing the topic for Xperium’s season 4: images.
